CHAPTER TWELVE

Amelia asked Jenna if she could use Robert’s office for her chat with Roddy. She also asked her not to mention it to Robert if he phoned because she wanted to tell him about it herself, depending on how things went.

Naturally, Jenna agreed to both so when her phone rang at ten-thirty and she saw that it was Robert, she didn’t tell him that his mother was sitting opposite her.

‘How are you feeling this morning?’ he asked.

‘Er ... I’m fine, thank you, Robert.’ She said his name so that Amelia would know it was him.

‘Good. Do you fancy a spot of fresh air?’

‘Sorry? I’m not sure I follow you. Do you want me to go outside?’

He laughed. ‘Yes. There’s something I want you to see. I’d come and get you but I’ve got an appointment later so it would be quicker if you met me here. I don’t suppose you drove to work did you? If not, just get a cab and take the money out of petty cash.’

‘Okay,’ she said hesitantly. ‘Where are you?’

‘Oh. I’m at the top of Claremont Cliff Road, near the old restaurant. Meet me there. See you in about fifteen minutes. Bye.’

‘Er. That was Robert, obviously. He ... he wants me to meet him at Claremont Cliffs now, so ... I’ll see you later if that’s okay. I’m not sure when.’

‘Good,’ Amelia said. ‘He’s gone to look at it then. Now remember. Don’t tell him that I’m here. He knows I’m going to be here sometime today but he mustn’t know about Roddy, so if he says he’ll come back with you, make sure it’s not until after twelve. We probably won’t be anywhere near that long but I’d rather be on the safe side. I know he’s got a lunch appointment at twelve-thirty so we should be okay. Have fun.’

Jenna called a cab and she was on her way to meet Robert just a few minutes later. On the way, she called her mother to see if there was any news her end and to tell her about Amelia and Roddy, which came as something of a surprise. Fiona said that she had nothing to report but that she was sure Edward would be home that evening. Jenna sat back, closed her eyes and wondered why she was meeting her boss at the top of a cliff and whether she should apologise for trying to get him into bed with her.

A vision of him pushing her over the edge made her open her eyes and sit bolt upright. She decided not to mention last night and wait and see whether he would. Less than a minute later, she found out.

‘Hi,’ he said, grinning broadly. ‘You look much better than I expected you to.’ Then he adopted a serious, concerned expression. ‘Do you remember anything about last night?’

‘Er, thanks. I think, and … no, I don’t. It’s all a complete blur of gin soaked inebriation.’ She decided lying was her best course of action.
